News item
The House passed and sent on to the Senate the bill that
would allow the government to extend aid to Fannie Mae
and Freddie Mac that we discussed in our item Security
and Social Security-Can They Co-Exist in a Balanced
Budget below. The measure now
goes before the Senate, and if passed by that legislative
body will be signed by the president, who is no longer
threatening to veto the legislation. The measure also
contains a provision for the federal government to extend
aid for homeowners faced with mortgage foreclosure.
