WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SUBMITTING MEDICARE CLAIMS?

Medicare providers are required to submit claims to Medicare for you. You must provide your physician with your Medicare Insurance Claim Number (HICN) which is shown on your Medicare Card.

Medicare claims must be submitted within a specific time frame in order to be processed. Any service provided since October 1,1997 can be submitted until December 31,1999.

Any provider who accepts Medicare assignment should submit their claims within one year from the date of service to avoid a 10% late filing fee. This fee cannot be billed to you.

Medicare payments will be released based on the receipt of the claim, not the date of service. Claims submitted will be held for 26 days before payment can be made, with the exception of claims submitted electronically which will be held for 13 days before payment can be made.
