Medicare Does Cover a Second Opinion Concerning Surgery

The question often arises when your physician recommends surgery as to who will pay if you request a second opinion. The answer is quite clear and unambiguous.

You have a right to obtain a second opinion whenever non-emergency surgery is recommended and Medicare must pay for that second opinion. You have the same right to obtain a second opinion and have Medicare pay for it whenever you have a major non-surgical diagnostic or therapeutic procedure.

If the two opinions vary as to the necessity for surgery Medicare will also cover a third opinion

You do not need a referral from your doctor to get a second opinion.
